25th Feb: Run for your life! 10K Run
Running and walking enthusiasts can make a day of it by taking part in the Clare Island Charity 10K Walk/Run titled Run for Your Life on the spectacular setting of Clare Island on Saturday 25th February at 1pm, with all proceeds in aid of Cancer Care West.
The event is the idea of Donal O Shea – current cancer patient and Development Officer for Clare Island. Donal was diagnosed with cancer in March 2011 and stayed at Inis Aoibhinn, Cancer Care West’s residential facility, while undergoing 6 weeks of pre-operative radiotherapy at University Hospital Galway. Living on one of Ireland’s west coast islands, Donal is accutely aware of the support needed by many cancer patients and their families who have to travel to Galway for their cancer treatment. Donal is appreciative of the support he received from Cancer Care West, and wanting to give something back and help raise funds and awareness for the charity, decided to organise the inaugural Clare Island 10K.
The charity walk/run is a great way to kickstart your first New Year 10K while taking in the breathtaking views of Clare Island. Entrants can make a day of it with family, friends or colleagues by taking a drive to Louisburgh, and boarding the ferry from Roonagh Pier to Clare Island and returning later that afternoon. The entry fee is €35 which includes return boat trip, race entry, water and refreshments after the race. There is some B&B accommodation on the island for those who would like to stay a night, or why not make a weekend of it with a stay in nearby Westport?
