NewsCancer Care West & Galway GAA Football Partnership
Cancer Care West and Galway GAA Football have announced a new Partnership that will lead to a number of joint initiatives throughout the year to include cancer awareness, support and fundraising. Speaking at the announcement John MacNamara, Chairman of Cancer Care West commented, "We are delighted to be associated with Galway Football and welcome this as a wonderful opportunity for our Charity to increase awareness of the vital services we provide to cancer patients in the West of Ireland. It will also help raise much-needed funds to continue and expand our services. This is a unique association for Cancer Care West with such a high profile organisation within the GAA, a community based voluntary organisation. It is a fantastic opportunity for the Charity to reach out to the Galway Football community and create awareness of our services to those affected by cancer. As regular exercise has been proven to reduce the risk of developing cancer, an association with a sporting organisation such as Galway Football is very appropriate. We look forward to a long and fruitful relationship." Christy Cooney, President of the GAA officially launched the announcement and said, "Congratulations to the Galway GAA Football Board and Cancer Care West on the Partnership put in place, which shows in a very strong way, the whole community ethos that exists between the GAA to support worthy and worthwhile projects such as this." Chairman of Galway Football Board, John Joe Holleran said, "We are delighted to be involved with such a wonderful charity as Cancer Care West, cancer affects so many people, not just in this county but throughout the West of Ireland. There is not a parish in the country that has not been touched by cancer. When we were initially approached by the Charity we were very enthusiastic about supporting their great work and saw the opportunity for a number of joint initiatives in fundraising, cancer awareness and support. We see this as an ideal Partnership to create awareness of the Charity's support services and are very proud to wear the Cancer Care West name and logo on our county football jerseys and look forward to a long association with the Charity." Speaking at the launch Professor Ruth Curtis, School of Psychology NUI Galway and Director of Cancer Care West said, "A cancer diagnosis is a major life changing event which elicits significant distress and poses many adaptive challenges for patients, their families, carers and close friends. Research has demonstrated that stress of diagnosis can be managed and resilient coping strategies can be taught through group and individual psychological interventions that enhance psychosocial adjustment of those in need. We are pleased that Cancer Care West offers evidence based supports for all those affected by cancer and since its opening our full time experienced professional staff have delivered these services to people throughout the West Region."
