Courses & Classes

At the centre we offer a variety of courses aimed at equipping people with different skills to cope with their illness. These include stress management, mindfulness and nutrition workshops.

Courses

Expressive Art Group
A 2 hour session designed to creatively explore feelings and meanings surrounding cancer. Open to patients at all stages of their illness.

Expressive Writing Group
Using the medium of writing to make sense of one's experience of cancer. Open to patients at all stages of their illness.

Living with cancer
A 4 week course designed to help manage some of the difficulties that can arise when living with cancer.

Managing Stress, Learning Relaxation and Visualisation Techniques
A 4 week course designed to manage stress and learn different methods for coping such as relaxation and visualisation.

Mindfulness
This 8 week course provides an opportunity to explore how meditation can help you deal with stress, pain and illness.

Nutrition Workshop
A 3 week diet and nutrition workshop incorporating demonstrations aimed at eating well.

Reflexology Workshop
This workshp is suitable for carers of cancer patients in order to learn the basic skills of reflexology and foot massage for use on the person with cancer at any stage of the cancer journey.

Classes

Gentle Exercise Class
An exercise class for those patients who are post cancer treatment and would like to incorporate exercise into their lives. The class is run by a qualified physiotherapist.

Relaxation Class
Regular stress management group that uses visualisation and relaxation techniques to help you unwind.

Yoga Group
A gently yoga session designed to be both relaxing and invigorating, helping us to connect with the body through movement exercises.

Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese philosophy and martial art created 350 years ago, combining deep breathing, martial art movements and internal energy development.

ARE YOU EXPERIENCING STRESS DUE TO A DIAGNOSIS OF CANCER?

Are you struggling with anxious thoughts and feelings following your diagnosis and treatment for cancer?

If so, this course may be beneficial to get your life back on track. Cancer Care West is offering a four week stress management course beginning on Thursday 1 March at 7pm in our cancer support centre.

Developing and maintaining a healthy stress management regime is one of the key lifestyle changes that the individual can address following a diagnosis of cancer. Stress management involves exploring our understanding of stress, becoming aware of the situations people and events that cause stress in our lives and most importantly of all, developing strategies that can assist us in coping with stressful life events. These include learning relaxation skills, developing good communication skills and learning about the importance of a healthy balanced lifestyle. If you feel you could benefit from this, please contact the centre to find out more about this course.

This course commences on Thursday 1 March and takes place from 7pm to 9pm. It is led by a clinical psychologist with many years experience of supporting people at traumatic times in their lives.

The course takes place in the Cancer Care West Support centre at 72 Seamus Quirke Road, Westside, Galway. Booking is required for the course which are free of charge. Further information and booking enquiries to 091 540040 or helen.greally@cancercarewest.ie

 

EXERCISE AND TAI-CHI CLASSES

Recent research has shown significant benefits to taking up or maintaining regular exercise following treatment for cancer.

Cancer Care West offers weekly exercise and tai-chi classes as a way of providing a gentle exercise regime, tailored to individual needs. Our exercise class takes place on Tuesdays from 10.30am to 12pm and our Tai-Chi class takes place on Wednesday s from 12.30pm to 1.30pm.
