That’s exactly what we’re asking 50 courageous people to do this summer.

The Big C Drop takes place on Friday 12th June at the iconic Croke Park stadium in Dublin. Whether you’re a thrill-seeker, a fundraiser at heart, or someone whose life has been touched by cancer, this is your chance to do something truly unforgettable.

This August, we’re inviting swimmers everywhere to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Frances Thornton Memorial Galway Bay Swim by taking on a challenge — Your Way.

Swim 13km — Anywhere, Anytime in August

Whether you’re a seasoned swimmer or just love the water, you can join us by completing a 13km swim, the equivalent of crossing Galway Bay, at your own pace throughout the month of August.

You choose the location:

Sea
Pool
Lake or River

Solo or with a team — it’s up to you!

The 20th Frances Thornton Memorial Galway Bay Swim Sets New Records

What a milestone! The 20th edition of the Frances Thornton Memorial Galway Bay Swim took place this past weekend—and it was nothing short of spectacular.

Record-Breaking Numbers

This year saw a record 157 swimmers take on the challenge of crossing Galway Bay, including:

47 solo swimmers
31 relay teams (110 relay swimmers)

It was our biggest event ever, and the energy throughout the day was absolutely electric.

Overcoming Challenges

In the lead-up to the swim, we faced a few challenges—from a potential small craft warning to concerns around water quality. But everything aligned on the day, and we like to believe that Frances was looking after us, as she always does.

An Extraordinary Team Effort

From the water to the shore, it was a community effort in every sense:

Our incredible boat captains guided swimmers safely across the bay.
The safety boats, led by George, Ciaran, Fergus, Cillian, and Roy, ensured the entire event ran like clockwork.
Brian Coll transformed the start line into a seamless operation.
Paddy Mc timed the waves perfectly, ensuring swimmers arrived in sync at Blackrock.
Our brilliant MC Joanne kept the energy high and handled the mass finish with style and professionalism.

On Land: Volunteers Made the Difference

The onshore crew were just as crucial—helping swimmers out of the water, providing warm food, and supporting each participant with smiles and cheers. The crowd at Blackrock was the biggest we’ve ever seen, creating an atmosphere that was both emotional and electric.

€180,000 and Counting

Best of all, we’re on track to raise an incredible €180,000 for Cancer Care West—a testament to the power of this event and the generosity of everyone involved.

Caring for Carers Workshop 3rd April 2025

Cancer Care West is hosting an educational and interactive workshop for all those caring for a loved one living with and beyond cancer.

The workshop will cover the impact of cancer on caregivers as well as coping and resilience in the face of cancer.

Attendees will be invited to develop their own personalised self-care plan. Digital copies of the self-care plan to be filled out during the workshop will be emailed to all those who register via the form below.

If you would also like to receive a physical copy of the self-care plan, please complete the address section on the registration form below and we will post a copy to you. Please note, we will not be able to post self-care plans to anyone who registered after 1pm on Monday 31st March.

The zoom link to join the workshop online will be emailed to everyone who registered via the form below on Thursday 3rd April 2025

The Men’s Morning is a peer support group for men living with and beyond a diagnosis of cancer. It is open to men of all ages, whether they are newly diagnosed, on ongoing treatment or have finished treatment. The group meets once a month on a Friday morning.
