Governance

Cancer Care West is a registered Charity (Charity Registration number CHY11260) and is a company limited by guarantee without a share capital.

The Charity is governed by a Board of Directors, chaired by Mr Padraic Clarke. The composition of the board is representative of the Medical sector by eminent cancer specialists and of the wider community. The Board of Directors serve in a voluntary capacity and do not receive any remuneration or expenses. Policy decided by the board is implemented by the Cancer Care West Management team.

Cancer Care West is fully committed to the Guidelines for Charitable Organisations on Fundraising from the Public issued by the Charity Regulator in September 2017.

These guidelines are intended to assist trustees of a charity to run the charity effectively, avoid difficulties around fundraising and comply with their legal requirements.

The guidelines were developed by the Regulator to:

  • Improve fundraising practice
  • Promote high levels of accountability & transparency by organisations fundraising from the public
  • Provide clarity and assurances to donors and prospective donors about the organisations they support.
  • Cancer Care West has adopted the Guidelines and believe we meet the guidelines set out.

Our Donor Charter has been produced to assure donors and potential donors of our commitment to honesty, openness, transparency and our commitment to the Guidelines for Charitable Organisations on Fundraising from the Public.

Complaints Procedure


We are committed to the highest standard of donor care. We treat all complaints with the utmost seriousness and endeavour to respond politely and promptly. We are committed to learn from any feedback we receive from the public and our supporters.

In addition, we are compliant with relevant obligations under the Companies Act 2014 and the Charities Act 2009.

We produce an annual report each year and the charity undergoes an independent audit and files annual accounts with the Companies Registration office.

Fundraising Standards

Cancer Care West is fully committed to achieving the standards contained within the Statement of Guiding Principles for Fundraising.

The statement was developed by the ICTR group and exists to provide charities in Ireland with a Fundraising Code of Practice.

The purpose of the statement is to:

  • Improve fundraising practice;
  • Promote high levels of accountability and transparency by organisations fundraising from the public;
  • Provide clarity and assurances to donors and prospective donors about the organisations they support.
  • Cancer Care West has adopted the Statement of Guiding Principles for Fundraising and believes we meet the standards the Code of Practice sets out.

Complaints Procedure

We are committed to the highest standard of donor care. We treat all complaints with the utmost seriousness and endeavour to respond politely and promptly. We are committed to learn from any feedback we receive from the general public and our supporters.

If you have feedback or a complaint

If you have a complaint about any aspect of our work, you can contact Cancer Care West in writing or by telephone. In the first instance, your complaint will be dealt with by a staff member who will aim to resolve the issue themselves or forward it to the most appropriate person to respond. Please give us as much information as possible and let us know in what format you would prefer us to respond to you, providing relevant contact details.

What happens next?

If you provide feedback or submit a complaint in person or over the phone, we will try to resolve the issue there and then. If you submit a complaint by email or in writing we will always acknowledge your complaint within 5 working days, and do everything we can to resolve it within 21 days. If this is not possible, we will explain why and provide a new deadline.

What if the complaint is not resolved?

If you are not happy with our response, you may get in touch again by writing to the Chairman of Cancer Care West. The Chairman will ensure your appeal is considered at the highest level and will respond to you within two weeks of this consideration. If you are not satisfied with this the complaint will be referred to our Board.

All matters of illegality should be addressed immediately to An Garda Siochána.
