Teresa’s Story

4th January 2017 by

For over 15 years, the Renmore set dancers have been coming together to dance on Galway’s Shop Street and raise money for Cancer Care West. Teresa, the principal organiser, originally intended to hold just one event 15 years ago but has got so much support that she hasn’t stopped since!

“We hold the event on a Saturday before Christmas and this year we had over 50 set dancers taking part. People walking along the street are encouraged to join in and we get great support from the local community. So far the Renmore set dancers have raised €50,000 for Cancer Care West and we are delighted to be able to do it”

Ronan’s Story

A few months after my wife Mags was diagnosed with cancer I decided to raise some money for Cancer Care West. I run a hobby store and board games café business in Galway and along with some friends decided to organise a a 24 hour board games marathon. With the support of the gaming community in Galway we raised over €12,000 – our suppliers donated prizes, our regular customers raised sponsorship and we held raffles and an auction live on Facebook.

We have started organising next year’s event for Cancer Care West and the funds will help Cancer Care West to pay for the numerous services they provide. Organising the event has helped me too – it helped me to deal with Mags’ diagnosis and gave me a purpose during a difficult time.

Anne’s Story

Cancer Care West was like a haven in the midst of my treatment. I stayed at Inis Aoibhinn for 4 weeks while I was having Radiotherapy and used many of the services at the Galway Cancer Support Centre. When my treatment finished I wanted to say thank you to Cancer Care West for helping me through a difficult time.

I knew people in my community in Achill, Co Mayo would be receptive to fundraising for Cancer Care West and so organised a golf competition and a music night in Achill which raised €6,700. Cancer Care West was there for me when I didn’t know what to expect, it was a pleasure for me to be able to give something back.

Seamus’ Story

4th January 2017 by

I lost both my wife and my daughter to cancer and every Christmas I light up my house in Cloonfad, Co Mayo, in their memory.

My daughter Karen died in 2011, just weeks after her son was born. Karen had used Cancer Care West’s services and she asked me to donate the money raised from the Christmas lights to Cancer Care West. For 6 weeks every year I light my house and garage, each side of the road, the road across from the house and I borrow the field next door so that I can light that too! The lights draw a great crowd and people drop in to say hello and make donations.

My lights have raised over €30,000 for Cancer Care West and I know that this is helping other families cope with cancer.

Seán’s Story

During my stay at Inis Aoibhinn I decided to organise a fundraising event as a way to say thank you. I’m from Ballyshannon, Co Donegal and stayed at Inis Aoibhinn for 6 weeks while I was having radiotherapy treatment in Galway. There was no way I could have afforded accommodation in Galway for 6 weeks and would have had to travel from Ballyshannon to Galway each day of my treatment if it wasn’t for Cancer Care West.

I’m captain of a darts team in Ballyshannon so it made sense to organise a local darts competition. We organised spot prizes and a fabulous hamper, all sponsored, and invited people from around the county to take part. The winner of the first prize of €200 very kindly donated the funds back to the charity and we were delighted to raise a total of €2,075 for Cancer Care West. I’m organising another competition in Donegal town next week. I’m happy to do it; I would have been totally lost without the support of Cancer Care West when I needed it.
